Learning to say "I'm sorry"

On the way home from Bible study today, I asked Izzie if she had a good time at church today. Our van discipleship went like this:

“Yeah. My friend took my toy.”

“He did?”

“Yeah, but I took it back, and I got in trouble.”

“You did?”

“Yeah. Jesus cried.”

I stumbled all over myself for a couple seconds before I said, “Did you say you were sorry? It’s okay to say you’re sorry to Jesus when you do things that aren’t right. You know how sometimes you do things that are not right and mommy gets upset? Remember how sometimes you’ll say, ‘Mommy, I’m sorry’ and then Mommy gives you a hug and tells you that she loves you?”

“Yeah.”

“Tell Jesus you’re sorry. Tell him you don't want to take toys from your friends and that you are sorry. He wants you to tell him your sorry, Izzie.”

In a hushed whisper I heard, “I’m sorry, Jesus.”

“That’s great, Izzie. Can you feel him giving you a hug in your heart and telling him that he loves you?”

“Yeah, Mommy, I can!”

Lord Jesus, make me ever ready to point my little lamb to you.

May the Lord bless you and keep you.

May the Lord make his face to shine upon you,
and be gracious to you.

May the Lord lift up his countenance upon you,
and give you peace.

Blessings,
